Jarvie School Assessment Plan
Reporting Student Achievement
The district has developed new policy on assessment and how we report to parents about their child’s achievement. This year there will be only a final report card issued to parents at the end of the year. We will be replacing the report cards with an online marks book called PowerSchool. Parent will be able to do the following:
- Access marks on individual assignments, quizzes and test.
- Check attendance
- Check teachers comments on individual assignments
- Download the student assignment sheets
- Send messages to the teachers regarding assessment.
Jarvie School’s Assessment Plan
Jarvie School will be focusing on the following types of assessment:
Formative assessments are on-going assessments, reviews, and observations in a classroom. Teachers use formative assessment to improve instructional methods and student feedback throughout the teaching and learning process. All formative marks for assignments and quizzes will be recorded in PowerSchool. They will be marked as (f) before the description. Eg. (f) Square Root Quiz. When an Assignment or quiz is marked as formative the mark will not be used in the final mark. Formative assessment helps students learn.
Summative assessments are typically used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs and services at the end of an academic year or at a pre-determined time. The goal of summative assessments is to make a judgment of student competency after an instructional phase is complete.
Homework completion: When a student does not finish the work it will be marked incomplete or late. We will work with students at lunch time to encourage them to get it compleated. If students do not complete their homework they will not be allowed to write summative exams or quizzes. If all assignment are not completed by June 17th students will not be able to write the final exam and will not be moved to the next grade because of insufficient evidence that the student understands the concepts that were taught.
Unacceptable work on assignments and homework: When it is evident that a student has not put in sufficient effort on a assignment or homework the teacher will mark it as incomplete. The teacher will let the student know where they are to make improvements and tell the student when to hand it in for re-marking.
